FOR DOGS

Peanut Butter & Banana Bites

These protein-rich treats combine the irresistible flavors of peanut butter and banana. Perfect for training sessions or as a special reward.

Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes Yield: 24-30 treats

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for grain-free option)
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (unsalted, no xylitol)
  • 1 large ripe banana, mashed
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water (or as needed)

Instructions

  1. 1 Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a silicone baking mat for easy cleanup.
  2. 2 In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats. If you're making grain-free treats, substitute with oat flour or almond flour. For guidance on ingredient substitutions, see our Pet Nutrition Basics guide.
  3. 3 In a separate bowl, mash the banana until smooth. Add the peanut butter and egg, mixing until well combined. Ensure the peanut butter is at room temperature for easier mixing. Important: Always use peanut butter without xylitol, as this artificial sweetener is toxic to dogs.
  4. 4 Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add water one tablespoon at a time. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  5. 5 On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes, or simply cut into squares or rectangles. For smaller dogs, make bite-sized pieces; for larger dogs, you can make them slightly bigger.
  6. 6 Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1/2 inch apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the treats are firm to the touch.
  7. 7 Remove from oven and let cool completely on a wire rack before serving. The treats will continue to harden as they cool, which is perfect for dental health. For storage recommendations, check our Storage and Shelf Life Guidelines.

Nutritional Benefits

These treats offer numerous health benefits for your canine companion. Peanut butter provides high-quality protein and healthy fats, essential for maintaining muscle mass and supporting a shiny coat. Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6, which support heart health and immune function.

Whole wheat flour and oats contribute dietary fiber, promoting healthy digestion. The combination of protein and complex carbohydrates makes these treats excellent for sustained energy release, making them ideal for active dogs or training sessions. For more information on portion control, visit our comprehensive guide.

The texture of these baked treats also helps with dental hygiene by gently scraping plaque from teeth as your dog chews. However, remember that treats should never replace regular dental care or professional cleanings.

Tips & Variations

For Crunchier Treats: Bake for an additional 5-10 minutes at a slightly lower temperature (300°F) to achieve a harder, crunchier texture that's excellent for dental health. This technique is similar to what we use in our Sweet Potato Chews recipe.

For Softer Treats: Reduce baking time by 5 minutes and store in an airtight container with a slice of bread to maintain moisture. This is perfect for senior dogs or those with dental issues.

Flavor Variations: Add 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce or replace half the banana with pureed pumpkin for variety. You can also incorporate a tablespoon of ground flaxseed for additional omega-3 fatty acids.

Training Size: For training purposes, cut treats into very small pieces (pea-sized for small dogs, dime-sized for larger breeds). This allows for frequent rewards without overfeeding. Learn more about treat frequency and portion sizes in our detailed guide.

Storage Instructions

Store these treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, refrigerate for up to 4 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months. When freezing, portion treats into smaller containers to avoid repeated thawing and refreezing.

Always check treats for signs of spoilage before serving, especially if stored at room temperature in humid climates. For comprehensive storage guidelines, refer to our Storage and Shelf Life Guidelines.
